Jason Hargrove was born in Paducah, Kentucky in 1976. He was raised in nearby Mayfield on the family cattle farm. Active in creating art from an early age he was often caught sketching in class. He attended art classes throughout high school, obtained a degree in Desktop Publishing from West Kentucky Tech in 1995, and two years of Art/French/Global Studies at Murray State University.

Finding enough time to spend on his new obsession - horses - during his time at university proved impossible. He dropped out and began searching for a way to combine his two loves - horses and art. The art of blacksmithy captivated him and in 1999 Tennessee State Blacksmith and Farrier School taught him the skills he needed to become a successful blacksmith. He later used those skills to sculpt metal into art.

In late 1999 he married Star McGill. He and his wife: shod, trained, managed, and competed horses in Nashville, Lexington, and Western Kentucky until late 2004. During this time they settled in Mayfield and began to raise goats and fancy poultry. Horses stayed the focus as he trained and competed in Dressage and 3-Day Eventing. In early 2003 they also opened SignForge (a vinyl sign business), which combined both art and his degree.

Frustrated and restless to see the world and go back to school he joined the Air Force in September 2004. They have since lived in Texas, Arizona, and Alaska. He has found the Air Force to be an inspiration. As he had hoped, he has been able to travel, attend classes, and paint as he works towards a life in art.

He is intrigued by the dynamics of crowded situations and it tends to be a recurring theme in his art. His preferred mediums are ink and gouache but he remains open to everything, and has worked in many, including steel sculpture. To him art is a release and a compulsion, within there is an impulse that drives him to the board to achieve a completion of thought and idea. He is currently working on new pieces in the mediums of pastel and gouache. His sketchbook is always open and in use. His works of late have been reflecting on his life in Alaska and of his military experiences and travels.
